Tour Plan

Day 1: Arrival / Arusha

Idyllically set within a working coffee plantation, Arusha Coffee Lodge provides a relaxed and elegant introduction to Tanzania. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred by road to the lodge, where spacious bungalows are nestled among lush coffee vines.

Wildlife is ever-present, with monkeys in the canopy, bush babies at dusk, and a chorus of tropical birds throughout the day. Unwind in your en-suite room, take in plantation views from your private balcony, and enjoy some of the finest freshly brewed coffee, harvested and prepared right on the estate.

Covering over 5,700 square miles of open grassland, the Serengeti truly lives up to its Maasai name, “Siringet”,“where the land runs on forever.” After flying from Arusha and crossing the Great Rift Valley, the vastness of the plains unfolds beneath you. From the air, it is sometimes possible to spot the immense herds of wildebeest and zebra that make up the Great Migration, their dark forms stretching across the savannah before you land deep within this remarkable ecosystem.

Upon arrival, you will set out immediately on your first game drive, where the scale seen from above gives way to intimate wildlife encounters. Elephants move quietly along the tracks, antelope graze alertly, and predators lie hidden in the grass, often revealed only by the reactions of their prey. This period, typically between May and October, offers exceptional opportunities to witness the Great Migration, a spectacle of nearly two million animals whose movement defines the Serengeti.

Each day here is shaped by abundance. Vast herds of herbivores attract an array of predators, from lounging lion prides to elusive leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and crocodiles. Giraffes, warthogs, and hippos complete the landscape, ensuring no two game drives are ever the same. As the sun sets, return to camp for sundowners by the fire and a memorable dinner under the African sky at Serengeti Buffalo Luxury Camp.

Continuing your journey, you’ll travel into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where wildlife viewing is concentrated within the floor of an ancient, inactive volcano. While the area itself rivals the Serengeti in size, the crater’s steep walls create a natural enclosure, offering an extraordinary density of wildlife visible within a single panoramic view. Six distinct habitats coexist here, drawing a remarkable variety of animals to one compact setting.

A full-day game drive allows time to absorb the sheer abundance at a relaxed pace. Early mornings often begin with mist rising from the crater floor, revealing dramatic wildlife scenes as the sun breaks through. Ngorongoro is one of the few places in Africa where the Big Five can often be seen in a single day, including its resident black rhinos and some of the continent’s largest bull elephants. After an afternoon game drive, retreat to the privacy and elegance of Ngorongoro Crater Lodge to unwind and reflect on the day’s exceptional sightings.

Descending into the Great Rift Valley, you arrive at the shimmering pink waters of Lake Manyara. The park’s dense groundwater forest comes alive with birdsong, hornbills calling from the canopy as elephants, giraffes, and baboons emerge unexpectedly from the trees. Wildlife encounters here are often at close range, creating an intimate and immersive safari experience unlike the open plains of the Serengeti.

Lake Manyara is renowned for its rare tree-climbing lions, often seen resting along high branches, their presence revealed only by a flick of the tail. Beyond the forest, the landscape opens onto the lake itself, where flamingos gather along the shoreline and hippos wallow in the shallows. Enjoy a scenic lunch overlooking the water before checking in to the secluded luxury of Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, perfectly positioned for relaxation amid the forest.

Heading south, the landscape is shaped by the Tarangire River, a vital lifeline for wildlife, particularly during the dry season when animals gather around its underground streams and nearby swamps. Your stay at Swala Camp, overlooking the Gursi Swamp, offers front-row views as wildlife converges on the water throughout the day and into the evening, often visible directly from the camp’s verandahs.

A full day of game drives reveals Tarangire’s defining features: towering baobab trees and some of the largest elephant populations in Tanzania. Herds numbering in the hundreds move through the park, with playful calves, dominant matriarchs, and dramatic encounters at the waterholes creating unforgettable moments. As night falls, return to camp for dinner under the stars, where elephants and other wildlife are frequently seen passing nearby, completing a truly immersive safari experience.

Today, you depart the wilderness and return to Arusha. En route, there is an opportunity to visit a local artisan market, where you may browse and purchase handcrafted souvenirs such as batik fabrics, Maasai blankets, wood carvings, and Tanzanite.

You will enjoy day-use facilities at the peaceful KIA Lodge, offering time to relax before your transfer to Arusha International Airport for your onward flight home.
